We are delighted to announce that we will be welcoming visitors back to Holme Bird Observatory from Monday 13th July 2020, and we are very much looking forward to seeing you once again. Thank you to all our members and visitors for your patience and understanding during this difficult time. Please be aware that we are not yet able to restore full access.

Some restrictions must continue and these are as follows: Hempton Marsh and Walsey Hills reserves will be re-opening to visitors on 13th July, but hides on these reserves will remain closed. At Holme the following hides will remain closed for the time being: Redwell Marsh hide, Car Park hide, Sea-watching hide, Dell hide and Broadwater hide. The Bus-Stop, Dowson and Richardson hides will be accessible to one household at a time, and the viewing platform and seating area outside the cordon will be available as well, with social distancing in place. The Observatory building will also remain closed to visitors, but a member of staff will be able to come out to meet you. We do regret that for now visitors will not be able to empty moth traps with our staff, but we will retain specimens of special interest for visitors to view at a safe distance. We will continue to charge day permit fees.

We are very sorry not to offer a fuller visitor experience just yet, but these measures are for everyone's safety and we do appreciate your understanding. We will continue to review hide closures, and will post any changes on our website.

Sunday 8th May 2016

Another warm day with sunshine and an easterly breeze. The highlight was a Grey-headed Wagtail with Yellow Wagtails among the cattle viewable for much of the morning from the sea wall near the Hun Sluice. Six Whimbrel were on the grazing marsh opposite Thornham Harbour, and a Common Sandpiper was on the edge of the Broadwater. A Common Tern passed offshore, and at least 1 Turtle Dove was around the paddocks. 2 Cuckoos were calling and a Peregrine was on the beach. Warbler numbers included 10 Lesser Whitethroats, 15 Whitethroats, a Grasshopper Warbler, 10 Sedge Warblers, and 20 Reed Warblers.
In the moth trap Common Carpet, Sharp-angled Peacock and Small Waved Umber were new species for the year, and another good selection of butterflies included Small Copper and Green Hairstreak. An Emperor Moth was found newly hatched next to the concrete path to the Observatory.

Highlights from Walsey included 2 Cuckoos calling nearby, a Hobby over Snipe's Marsh, 2 Swifts, at least 40 Swallows, 1 Sand Martin and a Mediterranean Gull heard. The Black-winged Stilt was still present on the scrapes at Cley, and was seen throughout the day; other waders here included 2 Curlew Sandpipers and a Temminck's Stint. Around the reserve were 6 Chiffchaff, 2 singing Cetti's Warblers, 3 Reed Warblers, 2 Sedge Warblers, 5 Blackcaps and 7 Common Whitethroats. The warm weather brought out butterflies in number with at least 10 Holly Blues in the area and the first Wall Brown of the year. Orange-tip, Speckled Wood, Green Hairstreak, Peacock, Small Copper and Green-veined White were also seen.
