CORONAVIRUS UPDATE – NOA HIDES RE-OPENING FROM MONDAY 14TH SEPTEMBER 2020

The NOA is opening hides on all reserves to members again from 14th September 2020. There are still some restrictions and please be aware that these are: Face coverings will be required in all NOA hides until further notice, unless you are exempt for wearing them. Only 2 people from different households may use any hide at one time. A single household of more than two people is permitted, provided no-one else is using it. We are still not able to admit visitors inside the Observatory centre at present. We regret the inconvenience to all our members and visitors caused by the loss of use of these facilities during the first five months of the COVID-19 outbreak. Please be considerate of the restrictions we have put in place, allowing us to restore access as safely as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Holme Bird Observatory Sunday 30th August 2020

Another exciting seawatching this morning with highlights including 56 Wigeon, 31 Teal, 11 Pintail, 118 Common Scoter, a Red-throated Diver east, 5 Fulmars, 7 Manx Shearwaters, 50 Gannets, 50 Arctic Skuas, 43 Bonxies, 6 Little Terns, 8 Sandwich Terns, 3 Common Terns and 6 Kittiwakes. Also of interest today were  5 Whimbrel, 280+ Black-tailed Godwits, a Common Sandpiper, 2 Great White Egrets, 3 juvenile Med Gulls at Thornham Harbour, 2 Tawny Owls calling in the pines, 2 Sand Martins, 6 Swallows and 50+ House Martins, 2 Cetti's Warblers, 6 Willow Warblers, a Garden Warbler, 2 Lesser Whitethroats, 4 Whitethroats, 3 Reed Warblers, 3+ Pied Flycatchers (one ringed at the Observatory), 2+ Stonechats and a Wheatear.

Moths remained scarce with 4 Silver Ys, 2 Flounced Rustics, a Large Yellow Underwing, 4 Square-spot Rustics and a Turnip in the traps. Butterflies included Speckled Wood, Small Heath and Brown Argus, with 20+ Migrant Hawkers and 30+ Common Darters also noted.
