CORONAVIRUS UPDATE – NOA HIDES RE-OPENING FROM MONDAY 14TH SEPTEMBER 2020

The NOA is opening hides on all reserves to members again from 14th September 2020. There are still some restrictions and please be aware that these are: Face coverings will be required in all NOA hides until further notice, unless you are exempt for wearing them. Only 2 people from different households may use any hide at one time. A single household of more than two people is permitted, provided no-one else is using it. We are still not able to admit visitors inside the Observatory centre at present. We regret the inconvenience to all our members and visitors caused by the loss of use of these facilities during the first five months of the COVID-19 outbreak. Please be considerate of the restrictions we have put in place, allowing us to restore access as safely as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Holme Bird Observatory Friday 18th September 2020

 
Feathered Ranunculus

At the Observatory today is was a bright, cloudless and very breezy day with an easterly winds bringing a few migrants early in the day. At least 3 Redstarts were on the site and a few groups totalling 12+ Bramblings were counted, with a Grey Wagtail flying over calling, 2 Crossbills and 6+ Redpolls also recorded. At least 79 Pink-feet and a single Brent were noted, and on the sea 120 Common Scoters, 2 Fulmars, 128 Gannets, 3 Great Crested Grebes, 2 Arctic and 3 Great Skuas, 46+ Sandwich Terns and 2 Common Terns were of interest. Other birds seen included 2 Red Kites, 4 Great White Egrets, 220 Grey Plover, 5 Whimbrel, 4 Black-tailed Godwits, a single Ruff, Spotted Redshank, Greenshank and Snipe.
 
In the moth trap a Lesser Yellow Underwing, a Turnip, 4 Broad-bordered Yellow Underwings, 2 Feathered Ranunculus, 32 Lunar Underwings, 16 Large Yellow Underwings, 4 Square-spot Rustics, a Willow Beauty, 2 Vine's Rustics, a Black Rustic, a Large Wainscot, a Dark Sword-grass, 2 Archer's Darts and on the buddleias a Humming-bird Hawk Moth were all recorded.
